Many people in developing counties don't have the luxury of electric grids and have to rely on kerosene lamps for lighting. Kerosene costs money and breathing the fumes is dangerous. 780 million women and children around the world inhale a volume of smoke equivalent to smoking two packets of cigarettes a day because of this. A new light powered by gravity could be a superior solution to lighting needs for destitute areas.

GravityLight doesn't need to be recharged through solar cells. It doesn't use batteries at all. It's powered by the same force that keeps our feet on the ground. GravityLight is simply charged by a bag that is filled with around 9kg of material and hung from a cord below the light. A weight attached to the light takes 3 seconds to lift up, but provides 30 minutes of light as it descends. As the bag descends, a series of gears inside the device translates this weight into energy. The light strength can be adjusted, from strong task lighting to a longer-lasting low-level glow, and two terminals on the front allow it to be used as a generator so it can recharge other devices including radios and batteries.

The GravityLight project has captured plenty of public interest. The Indiegogo campaign has raised more than $115,000, blowing away the original $55,000 goal. One major goal is to eventually get the cost down to $5 per light, making it a very affordable purchase for people in need while saving them money over the ongoing cost of kerosene.

World’s first GMO Animal for Human Consumption - Atlantic salmon by AquAdvantage



It's Alive.........For many consumers, even those comfortable purchasing and consuming GM products, there is something “different” about creating transgenic animals for human consumption. Coming soon to a grocery store near you is a genetically engineered, fast-growing Atlantic salmon. It’s got a little of this, a little of that: a little eel DNA here and a little King Chinook salmon DNA and a growth promoter gene from an ocean pout there. AquAdvantage salmon - the world’s first genetically modified animal for human consumption which grows to “market size” in approximately fifteen months, while a typical salmon would take three years.

Proponents of GM animal food products might argue that the existence of a faster growing salmon, a food-source rich in proteins, vitamins and important fats, might reduce costs and make that product more available to impoverished communities who would certainly benefit from its availability. Opponents of GM animal food products, like opponents of all GM products, argue that the benefits and risks of these organisms in our ecosystem and diet are not fully known and the risks may outweigh the benefits.

Salmon is a particularly sensitive population which might be threatened by competition were GM salmon escapes farms for the wild. AquaBounty and the FDA claim that because the fish is sterile female it will have no measurable impact on the ecosystem and, like all other GM foods, those who develop them claim they are safe for consumption. But they say nothing of the fact that many species of fish frequently and spontaneously change gender. Sequential hermaphroditism (called dichogamy in botany) is the theory that supports the idea that Life finds a way.

AquaBounty’s GE salmon received FDA approval for environmental safety in Dec. 2012 (it had already passed FDA muster for safe human consumption in Sept. 2010). Currently, the FDA is in the midst of a 60 day public comment period (which ends on 25th Feb 2013) before they issue their final verdict on

AquaBounty’s. FDA is expected to finalize the approval for AquAdvantage salmon to be in market by 2014.
What happens with GE salmon, love it or hate it, is going to impact other GE food animal projects currently in the pipeline. That includes “things like chickens that are not able to pass along avian flu, cattle that are resistant to bovine spongiform encephally (mad cow’s disease),” or animals that have been engineered to serve “as a research subject modeling human diseases so we can find cures for cystic fibrosis, cancers and high cholesterol. What the future holds for GE animals, depends a lot on what happens in the near future for AquaBounty’s GE Atlantic salmon.

Note: GMOs are untested of their “long-term” impact on the environment and on human health. Most scientists are funded by corporations and therefore produce the results needed for the company to profit. GMO companies that create such GMO’s perpetuate exploit- farming (more yield) so that a license fees is paid to them by the debt-ridden-farmers who sees loss in growing natural or organic Os’. Insomnia? Circadian Rhythms lack in ShiftWorkers & Alcoholics



Genes regulating circadian rhythms are shut down in Alcoholics & Shiftworkers. Circadian rhythms refer to biological phenomena that oscillate within a 24-hour cycle, in keeping with the earth’s rotation. These rhythms are controlled by a part of the brain that is influenced by light. The human body, like many other mammals and some bacteria, displays changes in functions and behavior that wax and wane through the cycle of day and night. In-tune with the ‘biological clock’ within the body an individual has more than 100 circadian rhythms that are unique and influence various aspects of body functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hormone levels, pain threshold and even the ability to fight against harmful invaders like bacteria and virus. Almost no area of our body is unaffected by these rhythms.
In industrialized nations, up to 20% of workers work either night or rotating shifts, according to an editorial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Rotating shifts are the hardest on the body. The circadian rhythm is so ingrained in each one of us that what we’re doing is going against the body’s natural desire to be asleep at night-time and to be awake during the daytime. When you expose yourself to sunlight the body is supposed to switch off the production of melatonin which helps you fall asleep.

The world drank the equivalent of 6.1 litres of pure alcohol per person in 2005, according to a report from the World Health Organisation published on February 11th. Alcohol reduced the time it takes to fall asleep and increases deep sleep during the first half of the night. However, sleep disruption, or waking after falling asleep, increased during the second half of the night, the researchers found. You’re just sort of hurtled into this conscious-less void. Alcohol also reduces overall rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during the night. REM sleep is a stage of sleep during which dreams occur, and is thought to be important for memory. It also increases our likelihood of snoring. (Snoring can of course destroy relationships between entirely reasonable people.) And we don’t even get the benefit from that extra deep sleep, because once the alcohol wears off, those deep sleep phases are so disrupted that the net overall effect is a less restorative night.

Both Alcoholics & Shift workers are sleep-deprived and often get irritable or depressed, relationships and social life can suffer. Risk of ulcers, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease are higher. Memory and ability to focus gets impaired including headaches, lack of energy and trouble concentrating.

Regular, 8 hour restful sleep is crucial for the body’s repair. Here are some tips that help me sleep through the night:
  • Keep your workplace brightly lighted to promote alertness. If you’re working the night shift, expose yourself to bright light. Being exposed to bright light when you start your “day” can help train your body’s internal clock to adjust.
  • Limit caffeine. Drinking a cup of coffee at the beginning of your shift will help promote alertness. But don’t consume caffeine later in the shift or you may have trouble falling asleep when you get home.
  • Avoid bright light on the way home from work, which will make it easier for you to fall asleep once you hit the pillow. Wear dark, wraparound sunglasses and a hat to shield yourself from sunlight. Bright lights stop your body from producing its natural sleeping aid, melatonin so, dim the lights, use blackout blinds or heavy curtains to block sunlight when you sleep during the day. Even if your eyes are closed, the sunlight coming into the room tells your brain that it’s daytime.
  • Shut off the television and stay off the computer.
  • Keep a notepad next to your bed, so you can write down whatever pops into your mind when you’re trying to sleep. You can worry about those things tomorrow.
  • Keep pets out of your bed.
  • Ask your family to limit phone calls and visitors during your sleep hours.
  • Just relax. Right before bed, clear your mind; take a few deep breaths and stretch. If you’re feeling especially stressed, try a warm bath before bed.
  • Avoid alcohol and nicotine around bedtime.

Dangers of Genetically Modified Foods



GMOs work portends that artificially engineering crops with resistance to certain chemicals and exposures that would otherwise harm or kill them can improve yields and protect the environment. And this built-in resistance has allowed farmers to indiscriminately spray chemicals like Roundup on their crops without worrying about killing them. However, unlike safety evaluations for drugs, there are no human clinical trials done on GM foods by the FDA. The safety assessments on Genetically Modified (GM) foods done by them are too superficial to even identify most of the potential dangers from GMOs and for the vested interests of a few, FDA decided to allow GMOs into food without labelling them.

Since then, scientists have repeatedly warned that GM foods can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) reported “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.
A few findings include:
  • Thousands of sheep, buffalo, and goats in India died after grazing on Bt cotton plants
  • Rodents fed GM corn and soy showed immune system responses and signs of toxicity
  • Cooked GM soy contains as much as 7-times the amount of a known soy allergen
  • Soy allergies skyrocketed by 50% in the UK, soon after GM soy was introduced
  • The stomach lining of rats fed GM potatoes showed excessive cell growth, a condition that may lead to cancer.
  • Studies show organ lesions, altered liver and pancreas cells, changed enzyme levels, etc.
  • Testicle cells of mice and rats on a GM soy change significantly
  • Mice eating GM corn for the long term had fewer, and smaller, babies
  • More than half the babies of mother rats fed GM soy died within three weeks, and were smaller
  • By the third generation, most GM soy-fed hamsters lost the ability to have babies
The only published human feeding experiment (2004 study published in the journal Nature Biotechnology) revealed that the genetic material inserted into GM soy transfers into bacteria living inside our intestines and continues to function. This means that long after we stop eating GM foods, we may still have their GM proteins produced continuously inside us.
  • Our small intestine, which is responsible for about 70% of our immune system, behaves like a selective sieve: it lets only nutrients and well-digested fats, proteins, and starches enter the bloodstream and keeps out large molecules, microbes, and toxins.
  • Leaky gut syndrome happens when the intestinal lining becomes inflamed, and the microvilli on the lining become damaged; this prevents the microvilli from absorbing nutrients and producing necessary enzymes and secretions for healthy digestion and absorption.
  • In between cells are desmosomes, which keep the cells together, forming a strong structure preventing large molecules from passing through. When an area becomes inflamed, the structure is weakened, allowing larger molecules to escape. This makes the immune system produce antibodies and cytokines to fight off molecules because they are perceived as antigens.
Seralini Study & a journal by International Journal of Biological Sciences  provides solid evidence showing rats fed a lifetime of GMOs sprayed with the toxic Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide developed serious tumors that took over their entire bodies. Even weeds and pests targeted by GMO technologies have mutated and developed resistance to crop chemicals and Bt toxin. GMOs are also responsible for killing off bees, bats, butterflies, and other pollinators, whose bodies are unable to handle the onslaught of altered DNA and chemicals that are characteristic of GMO technologies.

Studies have shown that presence of Roundup, Bt bacteria, and other GMO byproducts in our water and soil which actually degrade and deplete soils of vital minerals and beneficial bacteria, both of which protect crops from pests, viruses, and other threatening elements.

Potential Cure for AIDS – Nullbasic Therapy



David Harrich from the Queensland Institute of Medical says he has discovered a way to turn HIV against itself in human cells in the laboratory. Research said he modified a protein in HIV that normally helps the virus spread, into a “potent” inhibitor. The protein was introduced to immune cells targeted by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), where it slowed the reproduction of the virus after infection.

An HIV-infected person is said to have AIDS when their count of CD4 immune system cells drops below 200 per microlitre of blood or they develop any one of 22 opportunistic infections like cancer or tuberculosis as a result. Most people infected with HIV, if left untreated, would develop AIDS about 10 to 15 years later.

The new Nullbasic therapy, if proven, could see the spread of HIV halted indefinitely, bringing an end to the deadly condition, said Harrich. The virus might infect a cell but it wouldn’t spread. It would stay latent in its host and wouldn’t wake up, so it wouldn’t develop into AIDS and you would maintain a healthy immune system.

“I have never seen anything like it. The modified protein works every time,” said Harrich.

Commenting on the study, Frank Wegmann, an Oxford University HIV vaccine researcher, said “The immune cells of the blood are the primary cells which are infected by HIV and if you want to have a cure with this new protein, you need to … get every immune cell to make this protein,” he explained. This would require gene therapy – a complicated, rare, potentially dangerous and very expensive option.

The Australian researchers have partly tested that [gene therapy], but not really in patients or in infected people, only in the lab. Harrich’s team, whose study is published in the journal Human Gene Therapy, said the modified protein dubbed Nullbasic inhibited virus replication about eight- to ten-fold in some cells.

The experiments were conducted in a lab dish, and thorough testing on lab animals is needed before any human trials can begin. Animal trials are due to start this year.

Even if all goes according to plan, said Wegmann, a Nullbasic-based treatment was probably about 10 years off.

In a recent study, researchers asked 169 volunteers from a university in the Midwest to hold one of two smiles—a traditional smile or a closed mouth smile—while they performed stressful activities. They also had some of the participants use chopsticks in their mouths to force a smile. During these activities, they monitored the participants’ heart rates. Researchers found that the participants with either the traditional or closed mouth smiles had lower recovery heart rates after stressful activities compared to those who didn’t smile. Even those who had a smile forced by chopsticks had lower recovery heart rates as well.

Antioxidants for Oxidative Stress in Depression
