Top Cancer Causing Foods

Many food items have been scientifically proved to enhance cancer risk. Some of the foods that are dangerous for your health are listed here and you should avoid such foods in your diet.

Processed meat
Meats that are preserved by using artificial methods of storing such as smoking, salting, chemical preservative or curing are responsible for producing colon cancer. A carcinogenic compound called as sodium nitrite is present in processed meats which are used to give bright red colour to the packaged meat so that it may look fresh. A 2005 study from the University of Hawaii found that processed meats increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67 percent. After a detailed review of more than 7,000 clinical studies covering links between diet and cancer, the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) declared that people should stop using processed meat for the rest of their lives to prevent cancer.

Hydrogenated oils
Hydrogenated oils are used to prolong the shelf life of preserved products but at the same time they create transfats. Transfats present in hydrogenated oils is not only cancerous but is also responsible for producing heart diseases and also interrupts with many metabolic processed. Transfats replace essential fatty acids that are needed for functioning of different organs. Hydrogenated oils also alter the structure and flexibility of cell membranes throughout the body which is also responsible for producing cancers.

Microwave popcorn
According to the studies done by the researchers at UCLA, chemicals present in the lining of the bag, including perfluroctanoic acid (PFOA) are part of a class compounds that may be linked to causing infertility in human beings. These chemicals also caused liver, pancreatic and testicular cancers. When you microwave the popcorn, these chemicals vaporize and enter into your popcorn.

According to David Carpenter, M.D., director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany, farmed salmon consists of lower amount of vitamin D than wild caught but it also has higher concentrations of carcinogens, PCBs, flame retardants, and pesticides including DDT. “You can only safely eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer,” Carpenter stated. These fish are also typically treated with high levels of antibiotics.

Conventional Apples and other dirty fruits
According to a survey done by the Environmental Working Group, apples are highly contaminated with harmful pesticides. Other fruits that contain high amounts of pesticides include grapes, strawberries, oranges and potatoes. These pesticides are highly toxic for our body and in addition they also increase the risk of many cancers. Some studies also show that exposure during pregnancy may increase the risk of lowered I.Q in child and attention deficient hyperactivity disorder. It is best to choose organic fruits if you really love eating these fruits.

Canned tomatoes
Most canned foods contain bisphenol-A (BPA). It is a chemical that acts as estrogens and disrupts the hormonal activity in our body. Studies show that BPA is associated with heart disease, intestinal problems, infertility and other reproductive problems. All canned foods are dangerous, particularly tomatoes because their high acidity causes BPA to get infused with them. University of Missouri endocrinologist Frederick vom Saal, Ph.D., notes that you can get 50 mcg of BPA per litre out of a tomato can, and that’s a high enough level to impact people, particularly children.

It is shown that GMOs and other chemicals that are used to grow them cause rapid growth of tumour cells. GMOs are present everywhere such as food derivatives made from conventional corn, soybeans and canola. You can avoid them by properly selecting foods that are certified organic, certified non- GMO verified and which are grown locally and produced naturally without use of biotechnology.

Soda - Diet food, beverages

It is worse taking diet foods and other beverages. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently issued a scientific review of more than 20 separate research studies. It has been found that aspartame, one of the most common artificial sweeteners, causes a range of health problems such as birth defects and cancer. Sucralose (Splenda), saccharin and various other artificial sweeteners have also been linked to causing cancer. A 2010 study in the journal "Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention" shows that individuals who consume two or more servings of soda per week have an 87 percent higher chance of developing pancreatic cancer compared to individuals who do not consume soft drinks.
